What Is a Vision Board?
Have you heard of a vision board? I’ve been quite open about my Postpartum Depression (PPD) with those who are close to me. At one stage of my PPD I went through an extremely difficult time where I had no motivation to even get out of bed in the mornings. I try to talk to as many friends and family as possible when I am feeling down or having a bad mom day, and most of them are understanding and willing to listen. There was one friend who recommended making a vision board. I had never heard of such a thing, so she explained it to me. I loved the idea and knew I had to try it out!
The Power of Visualization
A vision board is a tool that helps a person narrow down their desires through the power of choice. You are investing time and energy in visualizing your future and setting goals. Place the board in a common place where you know you will see it and it will remind you daily of your life goals. Take the time to look at it carefully everyday. Eventually you will notice that many of those things will come to fruition without you even consciously trying to achieve those goals!
How Do You Make a Vision Board?
Last January I had the opportunity to make my vision board at a special event with my sister. There were tables set up with all the supplies that we needed (tons of magazines, scissors, glue and boards). The event coordinators had explained to us that there really were no rules to vision board making – just find pictures of things, quotes, and words we like and start cutting them out!
The process of choosing what goes on your vision board is very simple, yet meaningful. You identify your wishes and desires and then start to choose images that represent those desires. You end up choosing messages and images that matter specifically to you and nobody else. I placed my cut-outs on my board and was pleasantly surprised at how nicely and cohesively everything seemed to be coming to together, and I wasn’t even having to try that hard!
If you take a look at my vision board above, you may notice that I have grouped similar photos and words together. I have Travel, Sikhi, Home, Health, and Mental Health/Personal sections on my board.
How Did My Vision Board Help Me?
I try to make an effort to stop and look at my vision board as I get out of bed. Whenever I remember to as I’m walking by, I make sure to pause and take a look. When I look back at it now, I am amazed at how many of the goals I had visualized have already materialized in the last year. Even though I was thinking that it may only happen five years down the line.
Why don’t you give it a try and let me know how yours turns out? You don’t even need magazines – you can print out pictures from your computer, or collect them over time. It’s tons of fun and could even be done as a family activity!
Thanks for this post. This is a great idea! Would love to try it.
I’d love to see your finished product ☺
This such a great idea to do with the whole family!
Yes, definitely! I have done this with the boys as well, although there’s didn’t last long. Maybe we should try it again as a summer project 🤗
Thank you for sharing how this helped you.
No problem jee, there will be more posts coming soon on PPD, anxiety and just mental health in general, so keep posted! 💜
