Heart Shaped Crayons DIY

We have been snowed in for the last two days, which is pretty rare here in Vancouver! We are lucky if it comes around once per winter season, so we are sure to head to the sledding hills as soon as it does! The kids and I have been anticipating and waiting for it, and we were starting to give up hope with all of the spring-like weather (even the daffodils have been blooming!). I realized that we had yet to put together a valentine’s gift for each of my daughter’s preschool classmates, and I remembered that I had made DIY heart shaped crayons way back when my eldest was also in preschool. For this project, we didn’t have to buy anything new because we already had all of the supplies laying around at home! My boys were also interested in making some, so we tried to make a few different shapes as well (fish and star), however, we found that they were mostly cracking and breaking as we were trying to pop them out of the molds.

We soaked the crayons in warm water for 5-10 mins first so that the labels would be easier to peel off.

We used silicone ice cube trays from Ikea

The kids had fun peeling the labels off of the crayons, it seemed like it was kind of therapeutic for them!

After the labels were peeled off, we broke the crayons into little pieces and placed them into the ice cube tray molds

We placed them into the oven at 250°F for 10-15 mins and once they cooled, we placed them into the freezer for 15 mins.

The heart shaped crayons were easier to pop out of the molds, we found that the other shapes were breaking. We were lucky to get a few in tact fishy shapes though! We used this free printable for our cards from The Long Thread.

We are so happy with the finished product! We used washi tape to tape the crayons onto the cards, and afterwards we wrote the individual names of her friends, and she decorated them with heart stickers we had laying around.

Supplies Needed – DIY Heart Shaped Crayons

  • heart shaped ice cube tray (it doesn’t seem like it’s available at Ikea anymore but I’m sure they are widely available at other stores)
  • broken crayons (Crayola brand is probably the best)
  • printed cards to tape the crayon onto (we used the free printable available on The Long Thread)

Instructions – DIY Heart Shaped Crayons

  1. Gather all of your old and broken crayons. In order to make peeling off the labels easier, soak all of the crayons in a large bowl of warm water.
  2. Preheat your oven to 250°F.
  3. Meanwhile, peel off the labels and break the crayons into small pieces.
  4. Place the broken crayon pieces into the silicone ice cube tray. It is okay for the crayons to be sticking out a little, in fact, this is preferable to ensure that your crayon turns out to be a good size.
  5. Place the silicone trays into the oven for 10-15 mins. Once they are melted, pull them out and let them cool.
  6. Once they have cooled to the touch, place them in your freezer for 15 mins and then proceed to pop the crayons out of the molds – and Voila! You’ve got yourself some heart-shaped crayons.
  7. Tape them to your cards and you are done!

I hope you have as much fun making these with your kids as I did! The end result is awesome and we can’t wait to hand them out to friends on Valentine’s Day!
